The Problem Of Athletes Foot

July 19, 2010 by Foot Health

Athlete’s foot is one of the most common foot problems that Americans deal with every day. Whether you are the college athlete of the year or the village gardener, athlete’s foot can affect anyone.

Athlete’s foot is an infection on the skin of the feet that is caused by fungus. The culprit is the fungus called tinea pedis, which is quite common in the surrounding areas. This fungus practically lives and grows everywhere just as long as the area is warm and moist.

They can be found lounging around in areas where there is moisture such as in locker rooms in college gyms, the swimming pool area, the bathroom, and even the classiest spa houses in the country.

This love for moisture is the reason why the fungus just loves the environment inside your footwear especially rubber shoes that are not often aired out and dried properly. And remember this, once the fungus inhabit your shoes, it will be really hard to make it go away. But how does this fungus get into your shoes?

Simple. When you use public facilities where there is moisture, these fungus adhere to the outer layers of the skin. When not washed out and dried, this fungus can live inside your shoes or await another foot, which it can adhere to the next.

Symptoms of athlete’s foot

How do you know when you have athlete’s foot? Often, people suffering from this foot problem will start to experience itching in between the toes. There will also be scaling and unusual redness in the skin.

Soon after, the affected area will crack and will blister. It is important that you do not scratch the affected area as touching it will cause the skin to open up and allowing the fungus to enter deep into the skin, thereby exacerbating the condition. It is also so much easier for the problem to spread to other areas of the foot when you are scratching and touching the affected area.

When not treated early, fungal infections like these can become really severe with the toenails becoming yellowed and thick.

Treating athlete’s foot

Although there are topical medicines available that can help your solve this problem, prevention is always the best treatment. Always wear cotton socks when using your rubber shoes. These absorb the moisture so that it will not adhere to the shoes. Of course, change those socks often as the sweat inside can also be a good environment for the fungus.

Q&A: My son has no Health Insurance and has a seriously broken foot?

Question by fishergirl: My son has no Health Insurance and has a seriously broken foot?
On Friday night 2/20/2007 my husband and I came home to find our 18 year old son had fallen on his left foot and fractured it. We immediately took him to the closest Emergency Room. They did several x-rays gave him an injection for pain and sent him home with the instructions to call his primary care physician for a referral to an orthopedist on Monday. I had to insist on seeing the x-rays (I am an RN) and was appalled at what I saw. He had two breaks on one bone. One was still in line but the other was seriously displaced. Since then we have not been able to find a doctor to see him. It seems that because he is self-pay no one cares. I’ve been given several excuses but I know and his primary physician concurs that it is because of his lack of insurance. If this is not set soon it may leave him crippled for life. If anyone has any suggestions I would very much like to hear them. If there is an orthopedist in Georgia that would agree to see him please contact me ASAP. Thanks
I wanted to add that the ER doctor spent a total of 30 seconds seeing my son. My primary physician told me it was the ER’s responsibility to ensure he was seen and taken care of. My faith in the medical community has been severly shaken. I’m considering a law suite if my son suffers long term damage from this. I have never been a proponent of sueing unless there was some serious and preventable neglect ot incompetency. I try very hard to be understanding and am not a vengeful person but this is my son. He is just beginning his adult life and I feel he had been treated with appalling antfpathy and neglect. Thank you all for reading this and hopefully giving me serious, knowledgable and caring answers. – Fishergirl and Son
To spool32: My husbands group insurance only allows add on once a year in Feb. and yes we have added him on. Unfortunately it will not be effective until March 1 and this will then be considered pre-existing. We had him insured on another program but they would no longer insure him after his 18th birthday (we were not aware of this until we received the cancellation notice) His birthday was 11/28/2006 and we erroneously assumed we had time. As the old saying goes, “when you assume you make an A$$ out of U and ME”

The Top 3 Most Important Skin Care Tips in the World Ever

July 14, 2010 by Foot Health

<!– @page { size: 8.5in 11in; margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

We have read many times about so many things that can make your skin feel and look healthier, well guess what here is another list of the top three things you must be doing for your skin.

Water. We all know that our bodies are on average more than 50% water, so if asked if it is important to drink lots of water, the answer is most definitely yes. Being hydrated means the body has enough water to do everything it has to in terms of renewing, repairing and basic functions. Take enough water out the loop and you are putting your skin on the back foot.

So how much water is enough? I do not believe or stick to stringently to amounts, I make sure to get at a minimum 1 litre of water a day and will drink more than that depending on weather, my current hydration levels, exercise or if I may have a cold or flu. As a general rule if your urine is close to clear then you are getting enough water.

Moisture. The body naturally loses moisture throughout the day and although you may be keeping yourself fully hydrated various factors can mean your skin is still suffering. Look at natural and organic moisturizes that steer clear of any nasties like parabens or SLS and make sure that it suits your skin. This is very important in the winter and summer months all the same where the weather can edge towards the extremes.

Sleep. Oh the power of sleep! Your body does some magic things when you sleep, it unlocks your subconscious to paint beautiful dreams, it replays, categories and stores all the millions of images and encounters you have had during the day and most importantly for you and your skin, it repairs and renews itself. I do not want to sound like your granny and tell you how you should drink a glass of warm milk and not sleep in front o the TV, we all know about the ways to better get to sleep and stay asleep. What I would say is if you are getting less than 7 hours sleep a night and you find yourself dozing off on the train, or napping at lunch time or when you get home from work then something is wrong. Start to look at this more and try and identify possible causes.

Plantar Fasciitis

July 11, 2010 by Foot Health

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of pain in the heel in adults. It is almost as common as the common cold! The plantar fascia is a structure that runs from the ball of the foot to the heel bone and supports the arch of the foot via what is known as the windlass mechanism. Plantar fasciitis is a strain with inflammation or degeneration of this plantar fascia.

The common causes of plantar fasciitis are anything that puts additional strain on the arch of the foot and overloads the plantar fascia. This included being overweight, overuse (as in sport), tight calf muscles or abnormal foot biomechanics such as a flat pronated foot.

The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is pain under the heel, especially after getting up from rest. It is more severe when getting out of bed in the morning.

The best treatment for plantar fasciitis is to remove the strain in the plantar fascia that is causing the problem. The best way to relive this strain is with the use of foot orthotics and stretching. In more severe cases this strain can be helped with low dye strapping. Long term, losing weight is very effective for plantar fasciitis. There are many other treatments that can be used for plantar fasciitis, but almost all of them are aimed at helping the damaged tissues heal and do not relieve the strain in the plantar fascia long term.

The Problem with Shopping in Most Retail Stores

July 9, 2010 by Foot Health

If you are a person in need of specialty footwear, you have probably experienced a variety of problems when shopping for shoes in a retail store. Even though retail stores often have a variety of sizes and styles for the conventional consumer, they often fail miserably when it comes to showcasing brands and types of shoes that the specialty footwear consumer demands. Some retail shoe stores fail to carry any type of specialty shoes at all.

Most shoe stores lack in another department (no pun intended) that affects people with diseases or disabilities that result in special footwear needs – they often do not automatically accommodate people with a need for mismatched shoes, different sized shoes, or odd shoes.

Another problem with shopping for shoes at a retail store when you suffer from foot problems has to do with the selection and availability of the footwear that you may need. For example, people who have survived a bout with polio, and now need specialty shoes should not have to suffer an additional indignity because they are now forced to deal with their disability AND an unattractive, ill-fitting shoe.

If a retail store has any kind of specialty shoe selection at all, it is typically limited, and often only for those with aesthetic specialty shoe needs – for instance, people interested in the purchase of height-increasing shoes, also known as lifts or elevator shoes. If a selection of specialty shoes exists at a retail store beyond this, it is often unfashionable, and it is generally difficult to find the particular sizes and styles that a person with different sized feet may require.

For all these reasons and more, it makes much more sense to shop for specialty shoes online, particularly if you have a disability that makes your footwear needs unique. The size and style selection in online specialty shoes cannot be surpassed, and you can choose the vendor that best fits your needs out of hundreds – or even thousands – of options. With the click of a mouse, all the problems that come about with shopping for specialty shoes at retail stores can be eliminated.
