Taking care of feet and sole when involved with elder care

Edit Article |

Posted: Aug 10, 2010 |

]]>

It is quite common for senior citizens to experience foot problems. These problems can be the result of the normal wear and tear on feet that occurs over time. Or, they can be a sign of a more serious illness like arthritis, diabetes, and nerve or circulatory disorders. Because of this, it is important that senior citizens practice good foot care. Health care providers or family members responsible for senior citizen elder care should help with foot care.

Be sure to check feet regularly. If you feel that you have a serious problem, check with your doctor, who can then refer you to a podiatrist if necessary. You can also put your feet up when you sit to improve circulation, stretch and walk regularly, massage your feet, take a warm foot bath and dry feet carefully afterwards, and always avoid shoes that don not fit properly.

The pressure on feet caused from shoes that do not fit correctly can cause unnecessary problems. Here are some tips for wearing correctly fitting shoes:

Shoe size can sometimes change with age. You should measure your feet regularly and do it at the end of the day when your feet are largest.
Most people have one foot that is larger than the other. Be sure to fit shoes to the larger foot.
Always try shoes on before purchasing them.
Walk in shoes before purchasing them to be sure they feel right.
Avoid heels or designer shoes that do not look or feel comfortable.
Be sure that the ball of your foot fits comfortably into the widest part of the shoe.
Do not buy shoes that are tight in hopes that they will stretch
The heel of the shoe should not slide up and down your foot as you walk.
The upper part of the shoe should be made of soft bendable material to match the shape of your foot.
Soles should be solid fitting and not slip, thick soles will cushion your feet when walking on hard surfaces.
Low heeled shoes are more comfortable, safer, and easier on your feet.

Common Problems

Fungal Infections. This can include athlete’s foot. Fungal infections thrive where it is moist, dark, and warm, like in a shoe. These produce dry skin, redness, blisters, itching, and peeling. You can prevent infection by keeping your feet clean and dry, changing shoes and socks to keep feet dry, buying well-fitting shoes that are not too tight, or dusting feet with medicated foot powder

Dry Skin. This can lead to itching and burning feet. Using a mild soap, lotion, or adding oils to bathwater can help with this.

Corns and Calluses. This is caused by bones in feet rubbing against the shoe and results in rough skin. You can wear special shoes or put extra padding in your shoes to prevent this.

Warts. Viruses cause these skin growths. They can generally be treated by over the counter medications.

Bunions. When the joints in your big toe no longer fit together, they can become swollen and tender. Treatment can include wrapping the foot, wearing special shoes that pad or protect the tender areas from friction, surgery, or physical therapy.

Ingrown Toenails. If you do not cut your toenails straight, the nail can break the skin if it grows back at an angle. This may causes bleeding and discomfort. Cutting nails regularly or removing the nail with surgery is used to treat this condition hammertoe. When the tendons that control toe movements shorten, the toe knuckle grows and pulls the toe back, causing the joint to stiffen over time and rub against the shoe. This can interfere with balance. To treat this, people can either wear socks and shoes that provide more room and comfort or get surgery if necessary.

Spurs. Stress on the feet can cause calcium bumps to grow on the bones of feet. This can become more uncomfortable if more stress is put on those areas by poorly fitting shoes or standing for long periods of time. To relieve symptoms, people can wear foot supports, foot pads, or get surgery if needed.

Swelling. This can be a sign of more serious problems. If you have consistently swollen feet, you should see a doctor.

So if you are involved with elder care you need to take care of their feet as well. For more details over elder care issues you can log on to: www.thecaringspace.com

Home health care is a great choice for anyone who needs extra help but does not want to lose their independence or the comfort their own home can provide. Dairy Goats And Skin Care

You may wonder how, in the world, dairy goats can help you manage skin care issues. It is true that dairy goats, such as the Alpine and the Saanen, provide milk used in bath and body products that are healthful for your skin. How are they healthful? I will explain, but first, here are some fast facts about these goats.

The name Alpine or French-Alpine goats are used synonymously. This goat originated in the Alps of Europe. They range in beautiful colors from pure white to varying shades or combining colors of gray, brown, black, red, buff, fawn, and more. Their hair is basically short. They have heroic temperaments and provide awesome milk!

The Saanen dairy goat originated in Switzerland, specifically, the Saanen Valley. They are white, cream colored, and some have spots on their skin. Their hair is generally short. The does, female goats, produce large amounts of milk. They have “peppy” temperaments and provide wonderful milk!

Milk from these dairy goats is, an ingredient, used to make mild and gentle natural bath and body products such as: handcrafted soaps, lotions, face cream, shampoo, foot scrubs, a bath soak, and more!

Recent studies have shown that goat milk can provide anti-aging properties. It aids in the regeneration of collagen under the skin, negating some of the visible signs of aging. It’s a buffer that leaves the skin very close to its natural pH. In fact, after using commercial soap, even the mild varieties, skin takes an average of two hours to re-establish its correct pH. This explains the uncomfortable, itchy, and tight feeling skin so many people experience after bathing. It is also the basis for the claim that soap should not be used on the face. However the concern, of using soap on the face, disappears when you use goat milk soap, since the skin’s acid mantle is left intact. Some people notice a difference between goat milk soap and commercial soap the first time they use it! Many users claim, no other soaps on the market relieves their dry, itchy skin the way this soap does. Many people benefit from goat milk lotions and creams by having soft, silky, and smooth skin. Others claim to have a beautiful sheen on their hair with goat milk shampoo. It is even used in exfoliating foot scrubswith mild and gentle soothing properties.  A bath soak offers a relaxing and rejuvenating feeling for just about anyone.

Many natural goat milk products contain natural extracts. These extracts have a multitude of healthful benefits.  These natural extracts help to provide beautiful skin.  Discover skin care tips with natural extracts.  The healthful benefits of handcrafted natural goat milk bath and body products are endless!

Tips For Healthy Winter Skin

Winter is here and the frost is not only nipping at your nose but the whole face. Fortunately, with a facial skin care routine that meets your exact skin care needs you can be on your way to healthy, radiant skin tone. Facial skin care is more than just cleansing and dabbing on the occasional cream at night. You need to be more responsible in how you protect your skin on a daily basis. Drinking more fluids and using products that have moisture-retaining ingredients like Phytessence Wakame are excellent methods you can follow. Skin care products that have special ingredients like wakame will add moisture as well as sooth your skin while the winter conditions are irritating and drying it out.

Simple winter skin care tips:

1. Take warm showers and baths. In the cold months, it is very tempting to take steaming hot showers. But that hot water actually further dries out your skin by drawing moisture out. Instead, opt for warm showers and baths which help maintain the moisture in your skin naturally.

2. Exfoliate. To many, this seems an unnecessary step, but once you start you’ll notice a difference immediately. There are a couple of options. For gentle daily exfoliation, use a bath “pouf” sponge or a loofah with shower gel and rub in gentle circular motion over entire body. Seek a gel that is free of sulfates (sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate) as sulfates are highly irritating and can cause skin to dry out even further. Additionally, avoid gels that include alcohol as it is also drying. Look for products with naturally moisturizing ingredients such as aloe.

3. Moisturize. Ok, that may seem obvious but it is vitally important and many people do not moisturize consistently, or properly. To properly allow your skin to maximize the absorption and retention of moisturizers, it is important to gently pat your skin dry with a clean, dry towel after showering, and then apply a good quality moisturizer within 3 minutes. This is when your skin is most receptive to the oils and it will also seal the water in before it evaporates. Avoid products that contain mineral oil or petroleum products as they can clog pores, and instead look for natural-based ingredients like aloe, coconut oil and shea butter. Some moisturizers also include anti-oxidants such as chamomile, green tea, and Vitamin E. Anti-oxidants can help combat additional free-radical damage that your skin endures from the winter sun.

4. Protect hands. Hands seem to endure the most damage in the winter. The cold air, the dishwashing, and the constant hand-washing to avoid germs all take a huge toll. To protect hands, keep hand cream at convenient locations – the kitchen sink, the bathroom, next to your bed, and in your purse. This way it is always within reach when you need it. For a hand cream, look for one that contains naturally hydrating oils and butters like aloe, illipe and shea. For additional protection, seek a cream with antioxidants that can keep the winter sun damage at bay. A good hand cream should not leave hands sticky or greasy.

5. Soften feet. Our poor feet – trod on daily, covered in socks and stuffed into shoes they take some serious abuse. Pay a little attention to them and they will be so grateful! Wash them carefully at least once per day (or even twice) and dry thoroughly between the toes. After showering, rub them with a pumice stone or a “foot file” once or twice per week to reduce the tough skin. Removing tough skin once or twice per week is sufficient, as over-exfoliating can actually cause skin to grow back thicker. Lastly, apply a rich foot cream at night. Look for one that has aloe or shea butter and peppermint oil to soothe and moisturize. Lastly, for added softness wear cotton socks to bed.

Foot Pain – 5 Essential Foot Facts to Consider

Edit Article |

]]>

The foot is one of the least seen parts of the body and for this reason often does not receive the level of care and attention that other parts do. This can in turn lead to a variety of foot problems and the discomfort of sore feet. Here are 5 essential foot facts to be aware of when considering your foot care regime.

1. Hot Feet – The average temperature inside your shoes is 106 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s a true wonder that your feet don’t just quit and go strike!

2. Hammer Toes – Women are the most frequent sufferers of hammertoes. In fact, the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society says that women have about ninety percent of all surgeries for common foot problems, such as bunions and hammertoes. A crucial factor in the causation of these problems is fashionable footwear that does not fit appropriately.

3. Ingrown Toenails – approximately 10% of Americans have had an ingrown toenail at one time or another. It is the most common toe -nail impairment. Ingrown toe-nails mostly occur in children, teens, and young adults, primarily because they don’t respect the early warning signs that something is wrong. Most ingrown toenails are self-inflicted – treat your toenails with respect and avoid unnecessary foot pain.

4. Plantar Foot Pads – the skin on the sole of your foot is the thickest on the body – three times thicker than the skin on your palms and fifteen times thicker than your delicate facial skin. The plantar fat pad thins as you age. Certain disease states, such as rheumatoid arthritis diabetes also causes this padding to atrophy.

5. Fetid Foot Odor – is a secondary effect of direct bacterial action on sweat-softened skin. Basically, moisture plus heat and poor hygiene ( a situation commonly found in our shoe wear) will lead to the increased breakdown of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis. A causative factor in this is poorly constructed shoes of rubber or plastic materials that allow for unrelieved accumulation of sweat, which in turn leads to skin maceration

Foot Pain can cause discomfort and distress but much can be done to prevent and treat this. For more essential advice, information and resources regarding foot problems and the management of sore feet check out http://www.sorefeetsolved.com.

Here’s some basic advice for taking care of your feet: Always keep your feet warm. Don’t get your feet wet in snow or rain. Don’t put your feet on radiators or in front of the fireplace. Don’t smoke or sit cross-legged. Both decrease blood supply to your feet. Don’t soak your feet. Don’t use antiseptic solutions, drugstore medications, heating pads or sharp instruments on your feet. Trim your toenails straight across. Avoid cutting the corners. Use a nail file or emery board. If you find an ingrown toenail, contact our office. Use quality lotion to keep the skin of your feet soft and moist, but don’t put any lotion between your toes. Wash your feet every day with mild soap and warm water. Wear loose socks to bed. Wear warm socks and shoes in winter. When drying your feet, pat each foot with a towel and be careful between your toes. Buy shoes that are comfortable without a “breaking in” period. Check how your shoe fits in width, length, back, bottom of heel, and sole. Avoid pointed-toe styles and high heels. Try to get shoes made with leather upper material and deep toe boxes. Wear new shoes for only two hours or less at a time. Don’t wear the same pair everyday. Inspect the inside of each shoe before putting it on. Don’t lace your shoes too tightly or loosely. Choose socks and stockings carefully. Wear clean, dry socks every day. Avoid socks with holes or wrinkles. Thin cotton socks are more absorbent for summer wear. Foot Massage

Foot massage is one of the most unbelievably relaxing. Foot massage is a great thing. Foot reflexology is “pressure therapy” and involves applying focused pressure to certain known reflex points located in the foot to cure or prevent disease. Foot reflexology is based on the premise that our nerve zones or reflex points go from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head, encompassing all vital organs on the way. Thai Foot Massage is a massage of the lower legs and feet. Thai Foot Massage stimulates these points to promote general health and well-being. Thai Foot Massage takes it’s origins from China art. thai massage balances the elements of the mind and body, while thai foot massage stimulates the internal organs, giving the receiver an holistic treatment.

There are various creams and oils that can be used for a foot massage. However, we recommend the use of essential massage oils to achieve an ultimately relaxing foot massage. Giving a foot massage only requires a pair of feet and someone to give the massage. Oil or lotion can be used, but it’s not necessary. A foot soak with a cup of Epsom salts dissolved in a gallon of warm water is a wonderful way to de-stress before you begin the foot massage. Dry thoroughly, including between your toes. Try to give equal attention to both feet, as the body abhors asymmetry. There are many foot massage techniques releif feet. Stroking massage techniques stimulates the blood vessels in your feet and promotes gentle heat. Hold the foot in your hands and begin to massage the top surface of the foot.

Use your thumbs in a slow, firm stroking motion, starting at the toes and moving up to the ankle. Another massage techniques ankle rotation. Firstly, gentle move the ankle side to side to loosen the ankle joint. Rotate the foot clockwise and anticlockwise 3 or 4 times to relax the foot from the ankle joint, reversing the directions will calm and de-stress your senses. Kneading massage technique uses the knuckles at the second joints. “Knead” the area like dough with large pressing, rotating movements. Other foot massage technique is pivoting. Gently hold the foot in you hand and use the other hand to massage the sole of the foot with your thumb. Pivoting can be a very relaxing especially if you vary the amount of pressure being applied to the ball of the foot.

Foot Massage Tips

1. Soak your feet for about 10-15 minutes in lukewarm water with a few drops of peppermint or lavender oil.

2. Stroke the foot from the cords towards the fingers, first gently then gradually increasing the pressure.

3. Oil or lotion can be used, but it’s not necessary.

4. Massage in circular motion using your fingers and your thumb on the sole of the foot.

5. Again massage the sole in circular motion using your thumbs and fingers.

6. Wipe off the excess oil or cream.

Ways to Properly Care for Your Feet

Edit Article |

]]>

Your feet may be among the most underappreciated and hardest working parts of your body. They will carry you hundreds of thousands of miles during your lifetime, pound the pavement for you when you are looking for a job and keep you on your toes when everything else around you is falling apart. For all they do for you, don’t you think your feet deserve proper care and a little pampering? Here’s how to make sure that your feet feel good and keep on doing what they are supposed to do.

The Basics – Proper Footwear

Treating your feet properly starts with proper footwear. If you are on your feet a lot during the day, be sure that you choose shoes that fit well and offer proper support. Some very basic tips for properly fitted footwear include:

Shop for shoes in the late afternoon because your feet will expand over the course of the day. It is best to fit your shoes when your feet are at their largest.
If your feet are two different sizes (and that’s true of many people) buy your shoes to fit the larger foot. Better to pad then to live in pain.
Have the salesperson size your feet when you are standing, not sitting.
Choose shoes with a roomy toe box and moderate heel.
If you must wear heels for work, keep a pair of comfortable shoes that you can slip into for walking and commuting.

Footwear is more than shoes, though. The socks that you wear can also make an enormous difference in the way your feet feel – and in preventing some common foot problems.
Choose socks that fit your feet right. Loose socks can wrinkle inside your shoes and cause blisters and discomfort.
Choose socks that have cotton or wool blend that lets your feet breathe and wicks moisture away from them. Your feet will stay cooler and bacteria will have less moisture to breed.
If you wear pantyhose or stockings, consider slipping a pair of cotton pedi-socks on over them for the reasons above.

More Basics – Routine Care

Most women lavish attention on their faces – daily scrubs and exfoliation creams, moisturizers and special cleansers – but few do much more for their feet than run a cloth over them in the shower. A monthly pedicure is no substitute for routine daily care for your feet.
Wash your feet with warm water everyday. Do not soak them more often than once a week, though, or you will dry out the skin.
After washing, dry thoroughly with a clean, soft towel. Make sure to dry between your toes.
Keep skin soft and smooth with a thin layer of foot lotion, petroleum jelly or skin lotion applied to the tops and bottoms of your feet. Do not put lotion between the toes to avoid causing an infection.
Smooth rough heels, calluses or other rough spots with a pumice stone. There are some great new products on the market that make smoothing your feet easier and prevent injury to your skin.
Trim toenails once a week. Cut nails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. If toenails are exceptionally thick or yellowed, or if they curve or press into the skin, have your toenails trimmed by a foot doctor or a pedicurist.

Home Care for Common Problems

You can head off serious problems by caring for your feet properly and dealing with common problems before they become acute. Some foot problems need medical treatment and can become serious health threats. Others are little more than an annoyance. Whichever categories your foot problems fall into, here are some tips for dealing with common foot problems.

Sweaty, smelly feet

If your body produces excess perspiration, you can end up with moist feet inside dark shoes – the perfect breeding ground for bacteria – which can lead to smelly feet. If you have a problem with smelly feet, there are several ways to deal with it:
Keep your feet clean with daily washing. Pay particular attention to the areas between your toes, where dead skin cells can collect and contribute to the problem.
Use foot powder in your socks.
Wear cotton socks, or invest in anti-bacterial socks.
Use odor-absorbing insoles in your shoes.

Dry, cracked heels

The skin on your heels is especially prone to drying and cracking. This condition can be especially common in people with diabetes and in older adults. The best way to deal with cracked heels is to prevent them with good foot care, but sometimes that is not enough.
Use a pumice stone to gently rub away dry, dead skin.
Wash feet regularly, but go easy on the soaking. Too much soaking will dry out your skin further.
Do not use razors or other trimmers to remove dry, dead skin.
Keep circulation going in your feet with regular exercise and stretching.

Foot care is an essential routine activity that should be done by all individuals to achieve optimum wellness. Our feet contribute an important role in our activities of daily living which generally involves standing, walking and moving around. The lower body extremities especially the feet appear to support the entire weight of a person bringing them to be the most overused part of the body. To help prevent damage and promote foot care, here are seven tips to promote foot health.

Inspect and palpate your feet regularly. Keeping track with your feet will help you notice any changes or foot irregularities when it suddenly differs in foot colour, thickness, temperature, skin turgor and note for cracks. Also check for the capilliary refill of your toenails that will indicate adequate blood oxygenation. Any growth or change on the foot is not considered normal and should be consulted to a physician.

Wash your feet on a daily basis making sure to clean and wash in between the toes. Wet skin is very vulnerable which is prone to cracking and lesions since the skin become inelastic. Make sure you let your feet completely dry by using a towel to prevent skin from impairment.

Trim and cut your toenails. Be careful not to overly trim your toenails to prevent from skin damage and injury. For ladies and lasses who enjoy pedicures and nail art, make sure not to prolong the nail paint over a week. Use a mild nail polish remover to completely cleanse the nail polish. Prolonged paint will cause the nails to be brittle and may lead to certain foot problems.

Select the appropriate shoe and shoe size for your feet. When buying a new pair of shoes, consider and prioritize the comfort it will bring your feet and not after the shoe style. The best time for shoe fitting is during the day when the feet are at its largest.

As much as possible, avoid walking and running barefooted at your home. Walking barefooted may lead to an incident that may impair and aggravate the condition of your feet. It is best advised and wise to put on your slippers even at home to prevent any possible accident.

After a long stand, walk, run, a tiring and stressful day at work, lifting your legs against the wall will benefit your foot and legs venous return which promotes blood circulation. It is said that promoting venous return can aid in preventing formation of blood clots and plaques in the feet due prolonged standing, blood pooling and inadequate circulation.

Lastly, never disregard any foot or ankle pain even though you have a strong pain threshold and tolerance. Any pain connotes that there is an inflammation or any underlying cause within. It is better to consult your doctor or a podiatric physician to help diagnose and treat the pain.

For diagnosed type one or type two diabetes, caring for your feet plays a major role in maintaining your health. Foot lesions and wounds are the common cause of leg amputation for diabetic people. Make sure to routinely check and do foot care as recommended to prevent amputation from happening.

Your feet are an essential part of your well being – keeping them well and healthy is essential.

Treat your feet well and they will reward you accordingly. Here are 6 essential tips to keep your feet healthy, pain free, and in super shape.

1) Be sure to use a good sloughing lotion two to three times per week . This will assist in keeping dry, flaky skin at bay. Your feet will both look and feel nicer as a result!

2) Smooth your calluses with a good foot file or rasp once or twice per week. Remember to focus on prevention rather than cure so treat early, treat well and reap the long term benefits..

3) Instigate a weekly program of inspecting toenails at least once weekly and make sure you trim and shape as necessary. Cut your toenails straight across to help avoid ingrown toenails. Afterwards, smooth nail edges with an emery board or nail file

4) Treat yourself to a professional pedicure at least once a month if possible. Your feet are so important that`s its worth prioritizing this and as a added bonus you will feel great as well!

5) Remember the mantra walk, walk, walk, its great exercise and will leave your body and mind feeling superb. Exercise helps in maintaining a correct weight – excess w weight can put additional pressure on already hard pressed feet

6) Give your shoes a regular rest. . By alternating shoes you will allow them to dry out and give padding time to return to its normal shape. This will result in the shoes both lasting longer and keeping your feet healthier!

Your feet are so important to your health and well being that its worth learning how best to look after them and avoid foot pain. For more great tips, information and resources on foot care check out http://www.sorefeetsolved.com.
