Will Socialized Health Care in the US Kill Canadians?
Don Surber thinks so, and it’s hard to argue his point when you see stories like this:
More than 400 Canadians in the full throes of a heart attack or other cardiac emergency have been sent to the United States because no hospital can provide the lifesaving care they require here.

Orthopedic, gynecological and general operations must wait after Interior Health ends contract with private facility
More than 1,000 orthopedic, gynecological and general surgery patients in Kelowna have been left wondering when their operations will take place because Interior Health has ended its contract with the private operating facility that was to do the procedures.
Okanagan Health Surgical Centre took on day surgery cases for 3½ years to alleviate the backlog at Kelowna General Hospital. The centre’s six surgeons treated 914 orthopedic patients in 2007, and several hundred more gynecological and general surgery patients.

A three-year-old girl awaiting heart surgery has had her operation cancelled three times this month because of a shortage of beds.
Ella Cotterell was due to have aorta-widening surgery on Monday at the Children’s Hospital, Bristol. But 48 hours beforehand, the operation was cancelled for the third time as all 15 beds in the intensive care unit were occupied, her parents said.
A hospital spokesman said that procedures would be reviewed, but the case highlights a growing problem of cancelled operations in the NHS.
More than 57,000 surgeries were postponed for non-clinical reasons, including a lack of beds, last year – 10 per cent more than the previous year.

Up to 30,000 children are admitted to hospital for tooth decay and extraction every year – and the number is rising, research showed today.
Experts said the data highlighted a ‘major public health issue’ after they found a large increase in the number of children admitted since Labour came to power in 1997.

NHS and social services in England are failing to meet the health needs of people with learning disabilities, investigators say.
The Health Service and Local Government Ombudsmen said the standard of care was an “indictment of our society” after reviewing the deaths of six people.
Children in Britain are being failed by a culture that gives them low priority, exposing them to poor healthcare, knife crime and sexually transmitted diseases, according to the outgoing head of the Healthcare Commission.
Sir Ian Kennedy, appointed to lead the watchdog after his 2001 report into child deaths after heart surgery in Bristol, said that despite the regulatory body’s successes, progress on the care of children had not been as great as he would have liked. “What is getting in the way of doing what almost all right-minded people would think was a fundamental social obligation to its next generation? I wish I knew the answer.”

I think reality has just knocked B.O. in the head and butt. His image is marred, as well it should be, and he can’t take the heat. That’s it in a nutshell. Plain and simple. And I think even B.O. could understand that! Well, maybe not…that could be pushing it!
I think he was trying to save us from the month long propaganda cycle we are now going to have to endure.
so when Bush wanted legislation passed, he was a spoiled brat, too??? c’mon, get real….
No, he just doesn’t want history to repeat itself. Hillary’s health care reform failed to pass and then it was another ten years before anyone talked about health care reform again. You can bet if Obama fails to get any health care reform passed now, the subject will lose momentum and we will be stuck with our current crappy health care system for another ten years, which is what the health insurance lobby wants to happen.
You may be happy about getting ripped off by health insurance companies, but I’m not.
I heard one senator say they wanted to get it passed if the house passed it, Because if they didnt it would give republicans time to pick it apart over the break.
Again what happened to transparency, demos are saying thebill is to long to actually read, so they are not reading it.
Not acting like, is. You’re ruining my presidency. Whaaaaa…….
No, he is acting like someone that wants to get something actually done about a problem that has been talked about for too long
NO
Health care should be reserved for the wealthy. Why should a rich alcoholic have to wait for a liver transplant just so a few hundred poor children can get vaccinations.
it does seem that way.blaming one side or the other.he needs his banky
Which sounds great and all, until you are one of the 14,000 people per day, who are loosing health insurance.
The reason this is an imperative, is because there are more people uninsured now than in years past, and thier inability to pay for health care has the potential to cripple the existing system, if unemployment rates don’t skyrocket in the next 4 years.
Right wing head nodders, need to understand that the bs fed to them by AM radio entertainers, never tells the whole story.
Is he acting like a child that has to have his way NOW! And stomping his little foot?
To answer your question yes.
As to why? It is Bushes fault!
Yes and when people want to at least read the bill are considered outcast.
I am glad some one put the brakes on health care before it was too late.
The defining character trait of a spoiled brat is that they pitch a fit if they don’t get instant gratification.
If they don’t get the parental guidance they need as children, they become liberals and join the democrat party as adults.
Haven’t you ever noticed that not all democrats are drug abusers, but all drug abusers are democrats? That not all democrats are prostitutes, but all prostitutes are democrats? Not all democrats are homosexuals, but all homosexuals are democrats? The list goes on.
no
No. We need health care reform now because the situation is just going to get worse. The proposed plan is not a socialized health care plan so the comparisons to the UK and Canada are irrelevant. Nevertheless, note that the people in those two countries live longer than we do so how bad could their health care systems be.
The continuous rise in premium costs is adversely affecting businesses and more of them are reducing employee benefits or shedding their plans completely. That affects the economy as workers have to pay more out of pocket for the same coverage.
If we don’t adopt an effective plan soon this area of the economy that represents 16% of the GDP is going to continue to drag down the economy, not to mention the human costs in lack of early diagnosis and treatment due to the inability of many to pay those costs.
More like a desperate boxer who keeps losing in every round. Couldn’t get Gitmo closed as he wanted. Lost on card check. Other than a very meaningless watered down House version of cap and trade, which the Senate will not pass, he loses that round.
Clearly will not get single payer he wanted. If this Congress doesn’t pass some type of public option, he is done. He has one of the largest same party majorities in both houses of congress in history. And the guy can’t get anything passed. Reagan got more of his agenda passed with a Democrat congress than Obama.
No. First of all, Obama wants to make insurance more available to all. And change the system so that it is cheaper, and also so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Holland and Switzerland where private companies are involved in providing insurance.
Second, of course universal health-cover sucks. That is why we in Western Europe have it. We think, hmm, our healthcare system sucks. I know, lets keep it. I guess that is the same with Japan and Canada as well.
Third, Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this.
FACT – the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage.
FACT – the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet.
That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.
