Fungal infections of the toenails (onychomycosis) are a common problem. The fungus just loves the dark moist environment of inside the footwear. There are many treatments for this problem that range from a topical lotion to a prescription medicine. The success rate of treatment can vary quite substantially. The main reason for a poor success rate, is that the foot gets put back into that dark moist environment that the infecting fungus just love. A treatment getting some recent publicity is laser treatment for toenail fungus which uses a laser to destroy the fungus. Only one treatment is usually needed and it is expensive. The machine for laser treatment for toenail fungus is approved by the FDA but so far no insurance companies yet cover it. There has been very little research on laser treatment for toenail fungus, so not a lot is known about the success rates, despite a lot of claims being made for it.
